Fatal Texas car crash leads to recall of 41,000 Goodyear tires

KHOU -- HOUSTON -- A rollover accident that killed two young Texans last August has sparked Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. to recall 41,000 tires used on vans, SUVs and pickup trucks.

Goodyear said it would recall about 41,000 of its Wrangler Silent Armor tires produced in 2009 over concerns that a small number could tear, leading to crashes.

According to a February 22 letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Goodyear said "a small number of tires within this population may experience a partial tread area separation under certain severe usage conditions."

"Use of these tires in severe conditions could result in partial tread separation which could lead to vehicle damage or a motor vehicle crash."

Goodyear said it inspected in December the tire involved in last year's fatal

My Dad had a 1976 Ford LTD Grand Squire wagon he drove for work (with a "C Sticker" during the Gas Crisis) and went through 28 warranty replacement Firestone 500 steel radials over the course of almost two years before they finally recalled the entire line of tires. At least ten were full blowout and self-destruct failures, and the rest were caught at various stages of failure - you felt it starting to wiggle and sometimes could pull over in time. The best one blew and had the tread separate, wrap around the rear axle and lock it solid - at 65 MPH, in driving rain, towing a two-axle 6X12 rental trailer with a full 2 Cords of wet firewood. That was an E-Ticket Ride...

In 1978, Firestone recalled 14.5 million tires; in 2000, Bridgestone/Firestone recalled 6.5 million tires; in 2007, 450,000 Chinese-made tires were recalled; and last year, Continental Tires recalled almost 400,000 tires. This recall seems small by comparison.

Nobody likes to see death or injury as a result of a crash but most drivers put themselves in jeopardy by the way they are driving when such an incident happens. Any radial tire can separate at any given time and it is usually driver reaction that determines the outcome of the situation.
