New IIHS crash test: only 3 luxury cars out of 11 pass

GasBuddy Blog -- It has been known that the toughest testing does not come out of the NHTSA, but rather an agency funded by insurance companies, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A new IIHS test may shake up how auto manufacturers think about your safety in the future after a new test revealed just a quarter of cars tested by the new 40mph crash test passed.

According to a Motoramic blog post, The IIHS crash tests have long been more severe than those used by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA's crash tests slam vehicles into a rigid barrier at 35 mph; the IIHS had run vehicles at 40 mph into a softer wall that only strikes the driver's side. no surprise. Luxury cars aren't made for fast driving, they're made for the crowd that has the money and the time to block everyone else from moving.

These crash tests are consistent in pointing out that cheap small cars are just as safe as the larger ones. Their reports don't jibe with what I have seen over the years nor with common sense if you stop and think about it. I look with suspicion at anything insurance companies say as they try to perhaps slant the tests to cut their own losses. It's a lot cheaper to pay off a Focus than an expensive SUV--a car they say is the most dangerous of all.

High dollar crash buggies kill and injure just like lower cost crash buggies. The only difference is that you go out with a lighter wallet.
