I guess it's worth the premium, although the mileage isn't what it used to be with the new Jettas. my old rusty '98 TDI still gets 51 mpg driving locally, no more loooong stretches of highway driving. I don't know if it's the Amsoil lubricants or my driving but I'm not complaining. My wife's '02 1.8T gasser gets nowhere near that mileage maybe 30mpg at best(I'm sure I could coax more out of it).

I just bought my 2011 Jetta Highline TDI last week and love it...awesome car all around. Went with VW financing for 48 months - really, when you think about it the buyout on the vehicle is 10K after 4 yrs. Whether you keep it or sell it, you can still get that 10K. Fuel economy on these is insane, right now I am looking at 48 bucks to fill the tank for a week plus. The engine won't be broke in for at least 5 - 8000km...but the going rate on easy driving is upwards of 60mpg which translates from Red Deer to Vancouver on a tank! Good all around vehicle

Depends on how long you want to keep it. If its forever then the diesel is worth it. Also not to long ago diesel was a buck or more cheaper than gas.

Aftiggerintel, don't forget to figure in your 40K transmission service (if you have the DSG). This is easy to miss if you don't watch your maintenance schedule. Also, when you do your timing belt, whether yourself or at the dealer, it pays to spend a few extra dollars for a long-life belt. Just a little extra security :)

It will be the last car you buy.The body will fall apart before that engines goes.Of course proper maintence is recommended. 1990-92 jetta/golf diesels in my area are still attracting the $1500.00-$2500.00 with 350,00- 450,000 kms.

Resales on used TDIs are actually quite high. A 2004 Jetta gls TDI with 185k miles on it can get upwards of 11,500 current market. The premium for these vehicles keep going up as fuel prices fluctuate.

I have an 06 jetta TDI and I love it. The gas mileage kicks major ass. Def worth the extra in the beginning. I only have to get gas once a week and I drive about 250 miles per week. I only use about half a tank for the week most times less than half. And with gas buddy, finding the lowest diesel price makes it more efficient.

TDIs are worth the slightly extra cost if you plan to keep the car for 6-8 years. Diesel and 87 gas seem to flip-flop as to which is more expensive but all things being equal, the higher MPG in the diesel will eventually overcome buyer's premium, provided you drive 10K+ miles a year for the 6-8 years. The more you drive, the more you save compared to gas. The less you drive, the more regular gas makes a better choice because you would never make that premium back.

That depends on how much you're going to drive. I friend of mind bought one and he is getting over 50 MPG.

Factor in the number of years you plan on keeping the unit & its anticipated resale value based on what 3-4 year old Jetta Diesels are selling for today & that percentage down from their original sticker. I'm not an accountant but have been burned in the past by not considering the above.

Just calculate the savings per mile and do the math to see what the savings is over a 4 to 5 year period; keeping in mind that the cost of gasoline wont be as low in 5 years as it is now.

I have purchased 3 TDIs because the fuel savings have been worth it for our family. We went from 2005 Ford FiveHundred AWD and 2008 Ford Taurus X AWD to 2009 Jetta Loyal TDI and 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. So far we have saved an average of 250.00 per month in fuel costs when comparing our usage and fuel costs. That 250.00 adds up quickly over the course of a year by saving 3,000.00 despite having diesel cost slightly more than gasoline here. We bought my 2011 JSW brand new and have already hit the break even point between the gasoline vs diesel engine cost within the first 4 months of ownership.
Keep in mind that the diesel engine will last upwards of 500,000 miles easily with preventative maintenance. The required maintenance is full synthetic oil change a minimum of 10,000 miles apart, timing belt and water pump every 100,000 miles, and anything that normally breaks on the vehicle (same as a gasser) in between. The cost for 5 timing belts and water pump is about 5,000.00 if you have a mechanic do it. You can get the parts and do it yourself for about 400.00. The oil changes run anywhere from 40.00 - 75.00 so for 500,000 miles of oil changes, you pay 3,525.00 over the lifetime of the vehicle (47 oil changes since 3 are free at 75.00 each). The total expected maintenance cost is 8,525.00 over the time it takes you to get 500,000 miles.
Expected maintenance cost just for oil changes in a gasser is between 5,000 - 7,500 depending upon the model and oil type. Cost per oil change again about 40 - 75 when I check local dealer website and Jiffy Lube so if we take shorter interval that many recommend on gasser over 200,000 miles, you spend 2,775.00 and can expect to buy a new car or engine within 50,000 - 100,000 miles after that according to the sites I searched when researching TDI vs gasser last year.

The diesel jetta will pay for itself. It is around a $1500 extra for a similar set up jetta. It depends on your situation and how many miles you drive to figure out the break even point.
