Curious, since most manufacturers make their bread and butter on Trucks and SUVs.
Gas taxes are regressive....they hit the poor and working class the hardest.

So the guy has an opinion. Doesn't mean anything. It's just his view and he happens to be the CEO of GM.

I will always buy GM. They are by far the best American car manufacturer. Don't really care about the article.

I'm afraid I'll be just like my grandfather for the rest of my life. After fighting in the pacific theater in WWII, he refused to by anything Japanese. For him, it was principle. I won't say that the GM bailout is the same as WWII, but it has tainted my view of GM to the point that I will not ever own a post bailout GM vehicle. They should have failed. The market would be fine and those employees would be re-employed by the competition. GM is still, and always will be, a failure in my eyes. They are now just an extension of the failing administration and statements like these from the CEO are just a finger on the arm of propaganda.

I do not buy American cars. Simply speaking, they fall apart before other foreign cars.

America has said all this crap since the first oil embargo in 1973. All crap! I have purchase GM cars for 30 years and will continue to do so. Many great Americans work for GM, Suppliers, and companies that help build American autos. I wouldn't buy anything but a GM, possibly a Ford. All the GM cars I currently own or have owned have been great long lasting vehicles. GM, Ford, Chrysler, and the Asian craps will all build what people buy. All the hype is just that, hype. GM keep building your great cars. I own 4 of them right now and will buy more in the future!

I don't think the Volt is a flop but I was surprised that they are selling well.

"I don't buy anything from GM anyway since I got took to the cleaners by this sorry bunch of morons several years ago. They have put out "lemons" for several years now and presently they are almost as bad as Chrysler."
Apparently you disregard everything Consumer Reports says about GM. Or was it that 1981 Chevy that you bought that was a lemon?

Well said, geoag02.
No SINGLE auto maker is going to STOP making 'inefficient cars' until the market demands it..."we're" the market and, apparently, "we" still like those cars enough to buy them.

As soon as people stop buying inefficient cars, the car companies will stop making them.

actually, it sounds great, until you think who is going to be in control of the money that it goes to... Why would anyone in their right mind want to give any government agency more money?
What are you thinking....
Personally, I believe this ceo knows that an increase in tax on gas would never happen, at least not a $1. And since GM's number one vehicle is a Silverado, which is a high ticket / profit product, it scares them to think that they are going to have to improve MPG to meet the standards.
Car manufacturers will be making a lot of efforts to get changes made to minimize the cafe requirements....

Here's the link:
Increase gas tax, Not fuel efficiency standards
It surprised me that he would make such a statement since there may be some people who would decide to not buy a GM car because of it.

There are millions of working poor that would be pinched hard by this, some put into bankruptcy. This would cause runaway hyperinflation...yeah make our day punk.

Well, people are stupid. They complain about the price of gas, but they still speed, they still call for higher speed limits, they continue to jack-rabbit start from red, they continue to idle vehicles while waiting 15 minutes for the vehicle ahead to clear the car wash, they continue to idle at rail crossings while long trains pass, they still leave the car running while running into 7-Eleven to grab a Slurpee or cigarettes - the price at the pump seems to be the only way to actually get them to pay attention to consumption. Read the article, it makes sense. Yes, it would hurt, it would be a massive dose of "tough love".

Yea, I saw this on my local morning news...kinda scary, but sometimes the truth hurts.
Even @ $4/gal, people are STILL buying/driving 6 & 8cyl "muscle" cars that are primarily used for 'personal transportation'(myself included!). The auto mfrs are constantly struggling cater to the buyer's demands all the while under Federal pressure to make vehicles more efficient. GM would loose $billions$ if they were foolish enough to get rid of vehicles like the Corvette & Camaro in today's market. The CEO's 'suggestion' does nothing more than express GM's urgency to "downsize" our daily drivers...and it got "our" attention, didn't it? ;)
